Transparent quartz glass has better chemical stability than opaque quartz glass, which is due to the increased surface area of the latter exposed to the corrosive liquid due to the presence of bubbles. Quartz glass does not absorb moisture and does not weather. Quartz glass is very sensitive to all alkali and alkaline earth compounds. Very slight traces of these compounds will also cause quartz glass to crystallize at high temperatures.
